Basketball IQ: The Aerial Voyager flying high

June 21, 2014
If someday you’ll be in one of those game shows and the random million-dollar question is “Who won the 1994 PBA Governor’s Cup Best Player of Conference (BPC) plum?” this piece of information will take you to the bank.

In 1994, Vergel Meneses of the Swift Mighty Meaties went on a scoring spree that culminated in the Governors’ Cup. The Aerial Voyager finished the conference with 19.5 PPG and led the RFM franchise all the way to the finals. Swift eventually lost to Alaska but his efforts didn’t go unrecognized as he received the BPC award.

As it turned out, 1994 was just the beginning of the high-flying Meneses’ offensive explosion. The Malolos, Bulacan native won the next two BPC plums and was named 1995 MVP. He would never average less than 16 points until 2000.

The former JRU star’s impressive offensive prowess stems from natural talent combined with a vast arsenal of crafty maneuvers. Much respect to James Yap, but Meneses is the original “Man with a Million Moves.”
