Dayories: Puerto Princesa

June 17, 2014
Brgy. Concepcion is a quiet, coastal town in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. It’s almost two hours away from the main city and home to the Bataks, the smallest indigenous group in the province. It’s so quiet and peaceful in Brgy. Concepcion, one area is called Purok Matahimik. Aside from enjoying the ocean or trekking in the jungle, there’s not much to do around the tiny, unassuming barangay.

But of course, you can play ball.

Right smack in the two-lane highway is this basketball hoop made up of old rebar, wooden backboard, and wooden post. It has a picturesque backdrop of the sea and several trees within distance. It’s hard to imagine how a three-on-three pick-up game can seamlessly happen without speeding vehicles passing by. But that’s exactly why we Filipinos are branded as basketball-crazy. Wherever, whenever, however, we’ll find a way to ball. Basketball is truly life.

Also, in this highway half-court hoop, there’s no such thing as home court advantage. Every team is a road team.
