The Terrence Romeo Biopic (an excerpt)

Terrence Romeo once scored 83 points in high school. He is a UAAP MVP. He is a PBA scoring champ. He deserves a biopic. Bro.

INT. FEU GYM – LATE NIGHT

The SOUND OF A BOUNCING BASKETBALL ECHOES inside a half-lit, empty basketball court. The silhouette of a young boy dribbles the ball between his legs and spins away from an imaginary defender.

He throws up a shot. The ball bounces on the rim and goes in. He fixes his spiky hair, and smiles.

YOUNG BOY (V.O.)

Ako si Terrence Romeo. Tubong Cavite. Pangarap ko na makarating sa PBA.

TERRENCE ROMEO, 17, pulls down his yellow headband to cover his eyes. He dribbles the ball, quickly moving it from right to left. Left to right. Right to left.

TERRENCE (V.O.) (cont’d)

Kapag nakapikit ako, iniisip ko na binabantayan ako ng idol kong si Mark Caguioa. Isang crossover lang, tapos sasaksakan ko siya.

Terrence lifts his headband to hold up his hair. He seizes up an imaginary Caguioa at the left side of the floor. He fakes a shot then pulls back with a left dribble. He crosses over and drives hard to his right.

SLOW MOTION.

A snarling Terrence jumps into the air for a right-handed lay-up.

INT. TERRENCE’S COLLEGE DORM ROOM – LATE NIGHT

Terrence, sporting a Kyrie Irving jersey and braided hair, sits on the floor of his college dorm room with RR GARCIA. They are playing NBA2K12. On the TV screen, RR’s San Antonio Spurs are beating Terrence’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

RR lets go of the PlayStation 3 controller to pump his fists.

RR
Tony!!! Tambak na ‘yung Cavs mo.

TERRENCE
Relax ka lang, mag-iinit din ‘tong si Kyrie.

RR
Panis ‘yan kay Tony Parker.

TERRENCE
Wala ‘yan. Sa tingin ko, ako nga kaya ko panisin ‘yan eh. Balang araw. Isama mo pa si Boris Diaw.

They both laugh.
