Before it was called the FIBA World Cup, the prestigious global hoops competition was known as the FIBA World Championship. Since its inception in 1950, nations from the Americas and Europe dominated the event. But in 1954, one Asian squad was able to crack the top three.
Day 4: Japeth destroys Jeff
Japeth Aguilar is part of the national team because of his length and athleticism, and in the fourth day of the Gilas Pilipinas training camp, he showed exactly that—crossing over Andray Blatche and posterizing Jeff Chan.
After a grueling day of scrimmage, the team visited the family of Gary David for some sinigang, pancit, and lumpia. Kain Pilipinas!

“Record breaking” was one of the descriptions used to describe Adamson’s performance against the NU Bulldogs on Wednesday. “Ugly” was another.
Day 2: Every practice counts
The players of Gilas Pilipinas do not take long to warm up. After a “light” first practice session, Gilas went to work on their defense on Day 2 of their two-week training camp in Miami.
The Philippine team has tapped the services of Tab Baldwin, a former Lebanon and Jordan coach, to help them adapt to the more fluid and fast-paced style of international basketball and “unlearn what they’ve learned in the PBA.”
No jokes and fancy moves in this training sesh, but as Gilas coach Chot Reyes aptly put it, “every practice counts.” Just don’t tell that to this guy.

Day 1: Gilas Pilipinas take their talents to South Beach
The long and arduous journey of Gilas Pilipinas begins in Miami, where they will train with naturalized Filipino and free agent center Andray Blatche. Gilas coach Chot Reyes said the first day of training camp “is really just to break a sweat,” which explains the light workout, RDO goofing off, and Marc Pingris—sans intensity—coming in late.
“The guys just arrived last night from a long trip so we basically want them to rest, but we wanted it to be an active rest,” said Reyes.
The FIBA World Cup begins on August 30. Watch this video from interAKTV:
